Tommy Poz Recognized as Nassau’s Top Soccer Player with the Jim Steen Award

The Nassau County Soccer Dinner, hosted at Leonard’s Palazzo in Great Neck on Monday, December 4, 2023, served as a fitting backdrop for acknowledging Garden City’s Tommy Poz’s talent and contributions to the sport. The Jim Steen Award, a symbol of excellence in Nassau County soccer, recognizes the Most Outstanding Player each year, and Tommy Poz’s recognition underscores his exceptional skills on the field.

Tommy Poz’s remarkable accomplishment adds to the proud legacy of Garden City soccer. In being named the Jim Steen Award recipient, Tommy follows in the footsteps of Garden City legends like Doug Merrihew (1971) and his father, Tom Poz Sr. (1979). Tommy Poz’s recognition not only reflects his individual prowess but also the rich tradition of soccer excellence at Garden City High School. Tom Poz Sr. (pictured above) attended the awards presentation.

This accolade highlights Poz’s outstanding performance throughout the soccer season, showcasing his dedication to the sport. His contributions to the team and his impact on the field were truly exceptional. Tommy Poz lead Nassau County in scoring for the 2023 season with 34 goals. He also broke the Garden City High School career goals record with 61 goals. His play earned him All County, All Region and All-American honors this season.

Receiving the Jim Steen Award positions Tommy Poz among an elite group of soccer talents within Nassau County, affirming his place in the annals of local soccer history. His achievement not only celebrates his personal success but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring young soccer players in the region.

The event was momentous occasion for Tommy Poz, Garden City soccer, and the entire soccer community in Nassau County. The Jim Steen Award was first awarded 1966.
