Concussions and Return to Play Protocols

Posted On: Wednesday, October 18, 2023
By: Ed Ramirez

In February of 2010, the Garden City Board of Education adopted a “return to play” policy regarding head injuries. We have been successfully following the protocol since that time.

On July 1, 2012, NYS enacted a law entitled, “The Concussion Management and Awareness Act”. This act outlines rules and regulations related to students who sustain a concussion, also known as a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), at school and at any district sponsored event or related activity.

All Garden City coaches, physical education teachers, nurses and athletic trainers have been trained in the prevention, symptoms, and protocols for follow-up concussions.

Parents, guardians and the students themselves play an integral role in management of concussions. Please read the information provided and always report a head injury.

If you ever have a question, please do not hesitate to call.

Mr. Ed Ramirez, Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics – 516-478-2070

Mrs. Jean Cortese, GCHS School Nurse – 516-478-2030

Mr. Anthony Navaro, GCHS Athletic Trainer – 516-478-2070

Below are three attachments that will help to keep you informed on the protocols involved with concussions and return to play process:
