Garden City High School is proud to announce this week’s standout athletes, Matt Liberopoulos and Olivia Donahue, for their exceptional performances on the field. As recipients of the coveted Athlete of the Week title, Matt and Olivia have demonstrated not only remarkable skill but also exemplary leadership within their respective teams.
Matt Liberopoulos, a distinguished captain of the varsity baseball team, exhibited extraordinary prowess during the recent games. His stellar pitching performance culminated in an impressive 82-pitch complete shutout against Carey. In this remarkable display, Matt allowed a mere 4 hits and 2 walks while securing 5 strikeouts over 7 innings. Moreover, his contribution extended beyond the mound as he showcased his batting prowess, going 3 for 9 with a double, an RBI, and 3 runs scored. Matt’s leadership and outstanding performance played a pivotal role in maintaining the Trojans’ top spot in the conference standings as they head into the final stretch of the season.
On the softball field, Olivia Donahue, the varsity team’s captain and second baseman, shone brightly with her remarkable talent and invaluable contributions. As the leadoff batter, Olivia displayed her batting prowess by going 2 for 3 against South Side, including a powerful 3-run homerun. She continued her exceptional form against Jericho, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and 4 runs scored. Throughout the season, Olivia has maintained an impressive batting average of .529, with an on-base percentage of .590 and a slugging percentage of .912. Her all-around contributions include 2 home runs, 10 RBIs, 15 runs scored, and 4 stolen bases, making her an indispensable asset to the team.
