On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, the gymnasium of Garden City High School buzzed with anticipation and excitement as it hosted the opening of the Challenger Basketball Season with an intra-squad game, all in support of Hoops for Hope. Coordinated by GCHS students Michael O’Hanlon and Katherine O’Hanlon, alongside the parents of the late Bobby Menges, this event aimed to raise funds for the “I’m Not Done Foundation” while honoring Bobby’s memory.

The atmosphere was electric, with the gym packed to capacity. It was a standing-room-only affair, with alumni, staff, administration, and members of the community coming together to show their support. The gymnasium, adorned with posters of encouragement created by elementary students, reflected the unity and solidarity of the cause.

Michael O’Hanlon took the stage as the master of ceremonies, setting the tone for an evening filled with both competition and compassion. The Challenger Basketball Season commenced with an intra-squad game that showcased the talents and camaraderie of the players, all while rallying behind the mission of Hoops for Hope.

However, the event was not just about basketball; it was a celebration of community spirit. The halftime intermissions featured performances by the GCHS Cheer and kickline teams, adding an extra layer of entertainment and enthusiasm to the occasion. These performances not only entertained the audience but also highlighted the diverse talents within the school community.

Throughout the afternoon, the underlying message of resilience and support resonated strongly. The “I’m Not Done Foundation,” championed by Hoops for Hope, serves as a beacon of hope for individuals facing adversity, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and determination in the face of challenges.

As the final buzzer sounded, and the game drew to a close, it was evident that Hoops for Hope had achieved its goal of bringing people together for a meaningful cause. Beyond the thrill of the game, the event fostered connections, strengthened bonds, and inspired all those in attendance to continue supporting each other, both on and off the court.

In the spirit of Bobby Menges’ enduring legacy, Hoops for Hope demonstrated the profound impact that a community united in purpose can achieve. Through their collective efforts, Michael O’Hanlon, Katherine O’Hanlon, and the entire GCHS community have shown that, indeed, they are not done—they are just getting started in making a difference in the lives of others.
