Garden City needed every minute to secure it — but once again, the Trojans finished on top.
Top-seeded Garden City captured its 13th straight Nassau Class B field hockey championship Saturday at Adelphi University, defeating No. 2 Manhasset, 1–0, in a tightly contested defensive battle.
With just over four minutes left in regulation, senior forward Casey Psaki jumped on a loose ball inside the scoring circle and ripped a shot past Manhasset goalkeeper Annie Spina, tucking it just inside the left side of the cage for the only goal of the game.
“It felt unbelievable — I almost couldn’t process it,” Psaki said. “The ball popped up in front of me and my instinct was just to put it away. I knew that was our moment.”
Garden City (15-0) advances to face the Suffolk Class B champion on Nov. 9 at noon at Sachem East High School in the Long Island championship — one step closer to another state tournament run.
Manhasset (12-5) fought to the final whistle. The Indians earned a penalty corner moments after Psaki’s goal and used a timeout to draw up one final scoring chance, but the Trojans’ defense stood firm. Once Garden City regained control, it smartly kept possession until time expired.
First-year head coach Amanda Lee said she couldn’t have imagined a more rewarding beginning to her varsity coaching career. Lee took over this season following the five-year tenure of former head coach Lauren Lavelle.
“I knew I was stepping into big shoes,” Lee said. “But these girls show up every day focused and driven. They make my job easy because they truly want to be the best — and they proved it again today.”
Defense defined the early stages of the game. Neither team generated a shot on goal in a physical first half. Manhasset earned four penalty corners in the second quarter, but couldn’t break through Garden City’s airtight defensive unit.
In goal, Shea McGovern didn’t face a shot until the fourth quarter, thanks to the Trojans’ disciplined structure and relentless pressure on the ball.
“I trust every single person in front of me,” McGovern said. “They make my job simple. I just stay calm and ready for when the moment comes.”
Garden City controlled long stretches of possession in the third quarter, and Psaki nearly opened the scoring late in the period before pushing a shot just wide.
Manhasset surged early in the fourth, generating three consecutive penalty corners and multiple shots from Eden Randall and Lauren Kim — but McGovern and the Trojans held firm.
Moments later, Garden City countered, set up its attack, and Psaki delivered the decisive strike — another championship-clinching moment for a program defined by them.
And with the win, the Trojans remain undefeated, confident, and hungry for more.
