The prestigious Penn Relays once again provided an incredible stage for high school track and field athletes, and Garden City’s Boys and Girls 4×400 relay teams rose to the occasion with strong performances in Philadelphia.
The boys’ 4×400 relay team competed in an exceptionally fast heat that included Olympian Quincy Wilson, giving the race a truly world-class atmosphere. Despite a physical and aggressive start, the Trojans held their own. Luke Webber handled the pressure well on the opening leg before handing the baton to Chris Byrne. Connor Wellbrock powered through the third leg, and DJ McDonough closed with an impressive anchor leg to solidify the team’s standing. Garden City finished 7th out of 13 teams in a competitive and high-profile heat.
Earlier in the day, the girls’ 4×400 relay team got things started bright and early, running in the very first heat at 7:00 AM. Undeterred by the early start time, the girls delivered a standout performance. Taylor Maguire opened the race with a strong first leg, handing off to Delaney McNaboe, who kept the momentum going. Eva Vitale took over for the third leg before Kyra Lekanides, Garden City’s top sprinter, anchored the team to victory. The Trojans won their heat with a time of 4:06.04, an excellent showing on the national stage.
Both relay squads demonstrated the depth, toughness, and talent that have become hallmarks of the Garden City track and field program. The experience and success at the Penn Relays will serve as a springboard as the teams look ahead to county and state championship meets.
